Studying with disabilities

Studying with disabilities

The Social Counseling is committed to providing students with chronic diseases or disabilities with information and support to minimize the impact of individual disabilities on their study management as well as their daily life.

We are available for individual consultations and independent counseling. Consultations are strictly confidential.

Our counseling covers for example

  • Financing issues / social law entitlements
  • Study management with disabilities/disadvantage compensations
  • Technical help and personal aides
  • Overcoming personal problems and moments of crisis

Where necessary, we cooperate with an extensive network including university authorities as well as city and county authorities. Upon request we will provide details of appropriate contact persons or point you towards further services.

Accessibility:

The elevator is located on the left side of the foyer of Otto-Berndt-Halle. Social counseling service is located on the first floor above the Bistro in rooms 112 and 113. Both rooms are accessible with wheelchairs.

Accommodation:

All our newer buildings are barrier free. Among those are the housing complex Berliner Allee LAB and Alfred-Messel-Weg Karlshof. Many of the other complexes are low barrier.

Please indicate any disability under “notes” when applying online for one of our student housing facilities (preferably also specifying the impacts of your disability) and bring relevant documentation to your appointment (disabled ID card, hospital records...).

Information

Much important information about studying with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses can be found in the A-Z of the Deutsches Studentenwerk (our umbrella organization / in German).

As guests in our canteens and bistros:

Of course, we also list allergens in our dishes. You can see them on the spot, or in our online menu.

In our main canteens there are tables that can be driven under.

In the Mensa Stadtmitte this table is located in the Otto-Berndt-Halle on the right side in front of the stage. The tables of the outdoor area can also be driven under at the head Ends.

In the Schöfferstraße the tables of the outdoor area can be driven under.

Tray trolleys

we have purchased tray trolleys for you. These should make your visit to our canteens more pleasant.

For example, if you

  • are not so good on foot,
  • are heavily laden,
  • have one or more children with you, or
  • simply transport several trays.

After your meal or snack, please return the cars to the signposted "parking spaces" so that others can also find the trolleys.

Locations of the tray trolleys in the Mensa Stadtmitte:

  •  left of the Mensa Gabel
  • in front of the Bistro Stadtmitte
  • on the 1st floor: opposite the market restaurant to the left of the entrance to the housing service

The locations in the other canteens are currently still being determined.

Mobility/ semester ticket

If you are entitled to free public transport due to your disability, the portion of the administrative fees (Semesterbeitrag) that covers the semester ticket can be refunded.

The refund is processed by the respective AStA (students' union). In order to process your refund, they need your disability ID card as well as the valid coupon (it can be obtained at the Versorgungsamt (pension office) and should ideally start the same date as the semester, that is April 1st or October 1st respectively).
